larson missile silo

Larson Missile Silo - In the middle of the "Washington" state farm there is a rare cave, which I learned about while researching the Valhalla missile silo in Texas. After learning about this Silo Missile Titan dive, I added it to my map, hoping to eventually make it to the area. The location is far from any major cities, but luckily it was close to our route from Portland to Spokane, WA.

This Titan missile silo complex is much larger than the Atlas silo I dived into earlier. It also had more original equipment inside. I only did 2 dives here but could have done more exploring other areas of the complex. You can even go through horizontal underwater tunnels in other parts of the missile complex if you are properly certified and equipped.

Traveling in a camper made this diving much more accessible. We spent the night in town before diving and then camped straight to the dive site. In the 90-100 degree heat it was nice to have the A/C and awning running while we got into our drysuits for the 50 degree water environment below.

The dive shop has set up some chairs and tables on the surface to make getting around a little easier. This is where we get a pre-dive briefing before we go down into the tunnels.

Entered through the old escape hatch. This pit was filled with sand to protect the workers inside from the explosion above. If they needed a quick escape, they could open it and the sand would fall into the room below and they could get out.

The dive shop is equipping a pulley system so we can lower the gear down to the preparation room below.

Here you can see the sand from the extraordinary well that covers the floor. We did our final gear check and set up in this room before heading into the tunnels. These are the last lights we see, other than the ones we brought with us.

The shop keeps a small kayak in the prep room so we can drag extra gear with us through the flooded tunnels. The tunnel behind the boat is our entrance to the silage complex.

All the tunnels connecting the silos are flooded. The metal floor had long since been salvaged, so we had to walk over exposed beams and pipes. We are filling our BCs so that when we miss a step, we don't fall into an open hole in the floor.

Approaching the silo, the water became deeper and deeper. I really liked this as it helped keep the weight of the tanks off our backs and the water was nice and cold in our dry suits so we weren't too hot by the time we got to the silo. When we got to the silo through the door in the photo above, we donned our wings and masks and dropped our BCs to drop into the main missile silo.

It was great to see the silos as long as we made sure not to disturb the mud from the logs.

The depth of the silo was about 105-110 meters. The water temperature was a very constant 55 degrees.

The entire internal structure was supported by massive springs to protect the rocket and equipment from impact in the event of a bomb explosion on the ground.

Here I am looking at the blast doors on the ground. You can see the platforms fold as the rocket climbs to the surface of the fire.

It was the only piece of color in the silo. I believe these are pressure relief valves. They were probably for Titan rocket fuel.

In my opinion, the spring station and the elevator are a bit redundant now that the silo is flooded.

I'm glad we don't have to use stairs to get up and down this silo. I'm sure the people who work here never imagined that a group of people would be swimming in their secret base for fun.

At one point during the dive, I looked up and saw the dive master sitting on a log watching everyone. It was kind of scary and cool at the same time.

: If you're at all interested in diving and Cold War relics, this is a pretty cool dive! I found walking through the tunnels as fascinating as the diving itself. If you can only sink one silo, I would choose this one. It has a very authentic feel and there are many interesting things to see along the way. If I'm ever in the area again, I'll try to go back and explore some more.

Condo At The End Of The World

So far I have been able to dive in 2 rocket silos for scuba diving in the US. I am now addicted and want to find more. They should wait for more silage here.
