Swiss Gun Manufacturers - An opportunity was offered to us by our sportsman Attic/TAI Import to check out a Phoenix Redback Pistol. I volunteered because I'm aware of CZ-style pistols, but I haven't spent a lot of time chasing one. Sportsman's loft shipped in Phoenix AG Redback Ultralight. Let's dive into this Swiss-made competition pistol.
From what I could gather from others, the engineers working for Sphinx moved to Phoenix AG. The Sphinx pistol was a stellar pistol, but it was designed for self-defense. The only thing I see is a short pipe to CCW. I would like to see a full size version to use in competitions. Well, that's where Phoenix went with his Redback Pistol. The Redback is on the IPSC production list.

According to Phoenix's website, there are three variants of their Redback pistols; Redback, Redback Light and Redback Ultralight. The difference is in the material used for the frame.

The frame of Redback pistols is made of two parts - frame rail and handle, or, as they call it, "upper" and "lower" frame. For the Redback Lamp, the upper frame (rail) is made of steel while the lower frame (handle) is made of aluminum.
Redback Ultralight is similar to the CZ-75. The frame wraps around the slide. This is a tried and true design popularized by the CZ-75. Having the slide mounted inside the frame improves accuracy and makes for efficient barrel locking that improves accuracy.
In addition to the basic design of the CZ-75, the Redback was designed with the competitive shooter in mind. The first design feature that caught my eye was the machined texture on the side of the bezel. With the frame on the slide design, you can place the thumb rest on the side. Phoenix AG machined a small pyramid into the side of the frame to help support the thumb and apply lower pressure.
Phoenix also added a wider thumb safety. While the Redback is ambidextrous, the safety lever on the left side is wider and doubles as a shelf for the right thumb.

I found the trigger interesting. I like straight arc triggers so I was happy to see this on Redback. While straight arc triggers are not new, this design is new to me. See the vertical slot in the middle of the trigger arc? Rather than adding texture, the Phoenix slot machine works like a game of checkers. I can feel it on the tip of my index finger and it helps keep my finger from slipping off the bow.
The grip is also quite aggressive with its texture. The Redback Ultralight comes with this G10 grip with deep cutouts.
The front and back strap have the same texture as the mini pyramid on the side of the frame.
I took the Phoenix Redback Ultralight to a local USPSA match. I preface this with the fact that I don't like shooting with iron sights, so I don't do it at all. I'm more comfortable shooting red dot. The Redback Ultralight comes with a fiber optic front sight and an adjustable rear sight.

I had several unsuccessful shots, but it was the ammo and not the gun. At one stage you had to shoot very small steel from 40 meters away, something I haven't especially practiced with irons. But I had a lot of fun shooting the Redback Ultralight. I got some shooters asking about the Phoenix pistol and I was happy to share it with them.
The pistol is also made. You can feel it as soon as you leave. However, there is a downside and it comes at a price. I found them on sale for $3,100. Some of my friends had some etiquette shock. They question why anyone would buy a Phoenix Redback when you can buy two or three CZ-75 Shadows for the same amount of money. I can see both sides of the argument. One comment I read on Instagram was from a sponsored competitive shooter from France. She said the Redback is better built and less likely to break. But if you buy some backup CZ shadows, that problem is negated by the fact that you have spare parts and weapons. I look at Phoenix pistol like Rolex or other Swiss machined products. There are inherent qualities that add value. While you can have multiple pistols for the same price, they are not Phoenix Redbacks. If engineered and machined firearms interest you and the price is reasonable for you, I would take a closer look at Phoenix's offerings. This pistol is imported exclusively by The Attic Imports. Unable to compete on price, some Swiss gunmakers focus on novelty and customization to appeal to wealthy hunters and hobbyists alike.

"One of my best hunting friends died on a suede hunt two years ago," says Manfred Treutler, owner of the Makura hunting rifle company, based in central Switzerland.
Treutler himself is always unhappy with having to carry the weapon while keeping an eye on prey and its balance at high altitudes. In addition to personal danger, there is always the risk that the precious weapon will fall and be damaged. One day, he approached the Swiss master weapons maker Markus Ulrich with his problem.
"I asked him to make an [easy to dismantle] weapon that I could put in a backpack, leaving my hands free to climb," Treutler said. "There are many reductions on the market, but none of them meet my needs."
A year later, Ulrich gave him a prototype weapon that could be disassembled and assembled in seconds without any tools. Treutler marveled at the simplicity and ingenuity of the locking mechanism.

“I feel sad that it's just me and I asked Markus if he's interested in starting a company,” he said.
The Makura hunting rifle company emerged in 2003. They enlisted the help of one of the most famous Swiss brands - which does not want its association with hunting rifles publicized - to perfect the mechanism. Makura's clients come from over 90 countries and include actors, politicians and royalty. Whenever Treutler hunted in Africa, he would take a good rifle with him and place it in a conspicuous place. Most hunters ask about it and he usually sells two or three on each trip. The main selling points are portability and versatility, he says. The gun's case is just 70 centimeters long compared to 1.5 meters for most hunting rifles, and the ability to pick up the weapon and place it in your pack while hunting comes in handy when hunting big game.
"If you hunt elephants or buffalo in Africa, you have to walk 20 kilometers a day and the real hunters carry their own guns," says Treutler.
Those who like to hunt a variety of game on one hunting trip can carry two different calibers with just one stock, effectively getting two guns in one. Treutler himself always carries a .416 and .300 caliber front that he uses with a single stock. But despite the interest in the product so far, Treutler sees some clouds on the horizon. His patents expire in ten years, and he says there is a lack of interest in hunting as a hobby among the younger generation.
"A good gun lasts a hundred years and your son or grandson will use it. However, with increasing restrictions on carrying guns and trophies, hunting will get more complicated in the next 20 years and more people will be interested," said Treutler.
